Colts, Dwight Freeney to part ways

Feb 16, 2013

Following suit with the rest of the NFL, the Indianapolis Colts have begun to do a little housecleaning of their own. The Colts informed Dwight Freeney, the team’s all-time leader in sacks (107), that they would not be re-signing him to another contract. Freeney, who turns 33 next week and will be hitting the free agent market next month, was caught off guard by the move. “I was very surprised to hear they wanted to go in a different direction,” Freeney said in a text message to ESPN’s Ed Werder. “It would have been nice to retire a Colt ……

Jeff Saturday set to retire after Pro Bowl

Jan 26, 2013

The 2012 NFL season may very well go down as the year of the rookie, but it is also season in which we will say goodbye to some of the game’s greats. The pending retirement of Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and likely retirement of Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez have already been well documented, but it appears that another league mainstay is headed for a final ride into the sunset. Green Bay Packers center Jeff Saturday has announced that this weekend’s pro bowl will be his final game, putting an end to a stellar 14-year career. “We’ll finish it with sunsets in…

Colts lock up playoff berth with win over Chiefs

Dec 23, 2012

When an NFL team logs the worst record in the league and cleans house in the front office, that team is usually in store for a long and arduous rebuilding effort. Then again, when that league-worst record lands you a player like Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck, maybe that turnaround doesn’t have to take multiple seasons. Amazingly, the Colts, who have spent the majority of the season rallying around head coach Chuck Pagano‘s battle with leukemia, have clinched a playoff berth less than a year after posting a 2-14 record. It wasn’t easy, but the Colts (10-5) managed to knock off…

Colts QB Andrew Luck sets new single-season rookie passing record

Dec 23, 2012

It appears that 2012 may go down as the year of the record-breaker. We have already seen a number of historical  NFL league and individual team records fall this season (congratulations, Calvin Johnson), and the world has it’s eyes fixed on at least a couple of players who have the potential to break  records of their own. On Sunday, against the Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck broke another league record, albeit one that was set only a year ago. Luck, who entered Sunday’s game with 3,978 yards passing, set a new NFL single-season record for yards passing by a…

Chuck Strong: Colts head coach Chuck Pagano medically cleared to return

Dec 20, 2012

Usually at this time in the NFL season, it’s big news when a key player is medically cleared to return to the field. A team’s playoff hopes (and in some cases, the hopes of fantasy owners still in the mix) can often hinge upon it. However, when a member of the team’s staff is medically cleared for return, fans sometimes fail to take notice. Unless, of course, we’re talking about the Indianapolis Colts and their head coach Chuck Pagano. The story of Pagano and his fight against Leukemia, has been one of the biggest storylines in the league this year. In a…

Chuck Pagano’s story is much like that of the Colts’

Nov 5, 2012

Few thought the Indianpolis Colts would be 5-3 through nine weeks of the NFL season, and probably even fewer anticipated such results without head coach Chuck Pagano roaming the sideline. Pagano has missed the entire season to date for the Colts, after being diagnosed with leukemia. But Sunday, when the Colts took on the Miami Dolphins, in a matchup of two very unexpected playoff contenders, Pagano was in attendance to give his team a few words of encouragement. “I’ve got circumstances,” Pagano said following the game. “It’s already beat. My vision is to see two more daughters get married and to…

Andrew Luck sets new single-game rookie passing record

Nov 4, 2012

It was quite a day for Indianapolis Colts rookie quaraterback Andrew Luck, who led his team to a 23-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The victory puts the Colts at an unexpected 5-3 and in prime position to make a surprising playoff run over the second half of the season. Even more impressive, however, is the manner in which Luck earned the hard-fought victory. Luck, the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, completed 30-of-48 passes and two touchdowns, and his 433 yards passing set a new NFL rookie single-game record. The previous record was 432 yards, achieved last season by…

Tennessee Titans must establish the pass, then focus on the run game to beat Indianapolis Colts

Oct 27, 2012

For just the second time this season, running back Chris Johnson rushed for over 100 yards in a game and it was just the fourth time in seven games that he led the Tennessee Titans in rushing. Johnson rushed for 195 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win over the Buffalo Bills to send the Titans to 3-4 on the season. And don’t look now, but Johnson is prepped to face an Indianapolis Colts team that ranks No. 26 in run defense and one that hasn’t won a road game in their previous 10 tries. “We have…

Browns once again find a way to blow the game

Oct 21, 2012

Down 17-13, late in the fourth quarter, Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden fired a perfectly-placed ball 41 yards downfield to Josh Gordon, who was racing into the endzone with arms outstretched and a full step on the defender. Unfortunately, just as the ball hit Gordon’s hands, the rookie wide receiver ran directly into the sun streaming down from the open roof at Lucas Oil Stadium and appeared to lose sight of the football as it bounced off his hands and onto the turf. They would punt from the Colts’ 41-yard-line on the next play, and the score would stand for the remainder…

Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson locked and loaded for full carry load versus 49ers

Sep 20, 2012

The Minnesota Vikings and their fans have been anxiously awaiting the full return of Adrian Peterson, not just his limited action.  This may be the week that happens, as the San Francisco 49ers make a visit to Minneapolis on Sunday. The 49ers have been almost flawless in their first two outings this season against the Green Bay Packers and hosting the Detroit Lions at home. Looking closer of their running game defense, the 49ers are allowing 63.5 rushing yards on average against opposing teams. That is about what Peterson did last Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, at half-mast. Peterson is…
