Boston Faculty Soccer 2021 Preview: Defenseman Jason Maitre

Summer is knocking on the door and college football is just around the corner. As we get closer to the season, BC Bulletin will preview each player and identify three different options that could appear in the 2021 season. We’re going in numerical order and we’ve already completed a trio of players. Today we’re looking at Jason Maitre, a defender who will play a valuable role in defending Tem Lukabu.

After two games and redshirting in 2018, Maitre took on a much bigger role in 2019 and 2020. Maitre brought bravado and confidence to the position and has had his moments over the past two seasons. The biggest moment was a selection six against NC State in 2019. Last season he played all defense in Jeff Hafley’s plan, but mostly in slot or nickel. Finished the 2020 season in 32 tackles and had a hiatus from BC’s loss to Virginia Tech.

Maitre had what we could consider “solid” defensive moments but no top defender. Could that change in 2021? Let’s preview it.

Maitre plays an important role at the back end of the defense and will most likely continue as a nickel or slot corner for most of the season. As Boston College continues to shift to a 4-2-5 defense, the junior makes some big games, including a handful of interceptions, to aid the Eagles. While not an All-ACC-level cornerback, his game is valuable as he helps the Eagles overtake the defense to take the next step and improve.

As a physical defender, Maitre continues to play a similar role in the defense of Boston College as he did in 2019 and 2020. He plays here and there, by no means suspended, allows a few bigger games, but has one here and there too.

Jeff Hafley has always said that every player has to deserve their starting role in defense and unfortunately he is losing his place to another cornerback on the team for Maitre. Plays a much smaller role, mostly as a reserve, and backup on the two depths.
