Wisconsin Badgers College Football 2021 Preview: Offense

– – Was it the departure of Jonathan Taylor in 2020, or both? That wasn’t the Wisconsin offense we know and love.

It should be about the current game, dominate the time of ball possession, limit errors and much more. Instead, the Badgers ranked 12th in the Big Ten on the offensive, failed to convert on third downs, and the ground attack ranked 62nd in the nation.

However, Wisconsin was number 1 at the time of ownership, it found a quarterback who could grow to be a star in Graham Mertz, and there was an issue with recipient injuries, massive disruption due to the global pandemic, and …

– The floor play just wasn’t very good. Everything tied together. The Badgers had no receivers – really, there were moments when they were without almost all of their leading characters – and defenses against the run, but the O-Line didn’t generate enough thrust and there wasn’t Jonathan Taylor talent in the backfield.

However, the Badger O-Line is still the Badger O-Line. There are three starters back around Logan Bruss – a guard likely to be out of the race – and Jalen Berger has the knack for being great. The recruiting star led the team with just 301 yards and two touchdowns in its four games, but he has the skills to be a statistical monster when the line does its job.

– Everything started well for Graham Mertz. As the world of college football watched, he started the 2020 season on a 20-of-21 day with five touchdowns in beating Illinois. And then he came down with Covid, the reception corps was injured and the passing game was never the same.

However, he’s the most talented quarterback in Madison since Russell Wilson came from NC to change the ramifications of the UW crime.

And now he has the recipients to help.

On the plus side after all of the troubles of last year, all the good ones to throw at are back. Jake Ferguson is one of the nation’s better bottlenecks, and the combo of Danny Davis, Kendric Pryor, Chimere Dike, and Jack Dunn is among the best in the Big Ten.
