The fall 2021 high school football season opens and first meets in Albuquerque.

Highland and Eldorado at Wilson Stadium and Sandia Valley at Milne Stadium are the opening ceremonies of the Albuquerque Public Schools on Thursday, August 19th.

For APS, Friday night’s Week 1 schedule will be highlighted by the trip from Volcano Vista to Las Cruces to face the Bulldawgs in the Field of Dreams.

New Belen coach Phil Lopez makes his debut with the Eagles at home tonight, August 20, against the resurgent West Mesa, who haven’t lost any of their three games in the 2021 spring season.

The school, formerly known as Oñate, Orgelberg, attended Albuquerque High in Milne that first Friday.

Week 1 for APS ends Saturday afternoon August 21st with an excellent pairing of Cibola and La Cueva at Wilson Stadium. Cleveland visits Centennial the same day at the Field of Dreams, and Rio Rancho also faces a daunting road trip in Week 1 at the Wool Bowl against Goddard on Saturday afternoon.

Los Lunas’ new head coach Greg Henington trains the Tigers at Piedra Vista in Week 1 and will make his home debut against Alamogordo in Week 2.

Still looking for a new head coach, Manzano will open at home against Mayfield on August 20 at Wilson Stadium. Del Norte-Atrisco Heritage is the first week Friday night game at the Nusenda Community Stadium.

Rio Grande is the only APS team to have a week 1 bye. The Ravens open Week 2 against Atrisco Heritage at the Community Stadium, and Rio Grande will be back in the independent next season.

The most fascinating matchup on site in week 2 is Las Cruces in Cibola, also in Community, on the night after Rio Grande-Atrisco.

West Mesa and Cibola are two teams whose schedules are noticeably spruced up and are doing excellent – albeit abbreviated – three-game spring seasons.

The Mustangs play people like Centennial and Los Lunas on the non-district portion of their schedule, and West Mesa is already a member of District 1-6A with Cleveland, Rio Rancho, Cibola, and Volcano Vista, as well as Atrisco Heritage, which looked dramatically improved over the years Spring.

Cibola starts with La Cueva and Las Cruces and also faces Eldorado and Los Lunas before the district game begins.

(The full schedule for all 13 APS varsity teams plus Rio Rancho, Cleveland, Los Lunas, Valencia and Belen can be found on page B3 today).

The last Friday night of the regular season, October 29, features Cleveland in Rio Rancho and Cibola-Volcano Vista. The annual showdown between La Cueva and Eldorado takes place on Thursday, September 30th. Los Lunas and Roswell, who met in both the 2018 and 2019 Class 5A State Championship games, will meet at the Wool Bowl on September 10.

One of the most anticipated regular season games is Las Cruces in Cleveland on Friday evening September 10th.

The regular season ends on October 30th; This day includes a game at Wilson Stadium between Eldorado and Clovis. The Wildcats will have several games in the metropolitan area, including a hefty visit to Rio Rancho in Week 4. Belen will also play in Los Lunas on October 30th. But the Tigers won’t play against city rivals Valencia. The Jaguars who are now in Class 4A football simply cannot keep up with the overall Los Lunas attendance figures, so this rivalry is indefinitely.
