Faculty soccer analyst predicts Iowa-Iowa State would be the nation’s greatest sport in 2021

Iowa’s much-anticipated matchup with the state of Iowa is already starting to attract national attention.

The Hawkeyes and Cyclones didn’t play last season as the Big Ten eliminated non-conference games due to COVID-19, but both programs had standout seasons independently.

Iowa State qualified for the Big 12 title game, and Iowa managed to do the same in the Big Ten in one game.

These two teams are also known for playing close competitions. Two of the last three and five of the last nine encounters were decided by a field goal or less.

With that in mind, CBS analyst David Cobb has circled this game as his college football game of the year prediction in 2021. Here is an excerpt from his statement:

“Last year’s game was wiped out by the Big Ten’s pure conference planning, which was the first time since 1976 that the series has not been contested. Missing a game in the Cy Hawk series was a real downer, as it ended up being the first time both of them finished a season in the top 20 at the same time. The absence of the game on last year’s chalkboard should increase the anticipation on both sides as Iowa and The State of Iowa respectively attend with the conference title and aspirations for the college football playoffs.

The last two of the series, which were played at ISU’s Jack Trice Stadium, were decided by a total of four points, both of which went in favor of Iowa. It would be no surprise if this one is as close as these bitter rivals in the national spotlight. “

Other games selected by CBS analysts are Georgia-Clemson and Alabama-Ole Miss.

Iowa currently leads the all-time series 46-22 vs. the Cyclones and has won five straight games against its state rival.

The Iowa and Iowa State matchup will take place on September 11th at 2:30 p.m. CT.
