Highschool soccer stadium is renamed longtime coach

NORMAL (HOI) – Normal Community High School honors a longtime coach by naming the soccer field after him.

Unit 5 school board approved the renaming of the venue to Dick Tharp Field on Wednesday evening in tribute to the Ironmen’s head coach from 1968 to 1988.

Tharp’s 158 victories are the most in school history. During that time, Tharp led the Ironmen to eight playoff appearances. In 1974, his team was runner-up in Class 4A in the Illinois High School Association playoffs.

Unit 5 says that all costs for the change come from private donations. Current plans envisage that the name change will take place during the football season in the fall.
