Laurence Fishburne stars within the Texas soccer film Underneath the Stadium Lights.
The 2009 State Championship high school football team in Abilene, Texas takes center stage in Under the Stadium Lights starring Laurence Fishburne, Eddie George, Milo Gibson (Mel’s son) and Glenn Morshower. It will be available from June 4th in select theaters and streaming services such as Google Play and Prime Video.
Abilene went 15: 0 on the way to the state title of class 5A and defeated the eternal power and the two-time defending champion Katy with 28:17 in the final. It was the school’s first state crown since 1956.
The Eagles were led by cousins Herschel and Ronnell Sims. Herschel, a 5-foot-9, 195-pound running back, stacked 3,314 all-purpose yards and 38 touchdowns this season. Ronnell threw 1,752 yards and 17 scores as the team’s quarterback while running 1,185 yards and 14 more trips to the end zone.
Fishburne plays Harold Christian, a restaurant owner who inspires the team. George plays Ronnell Sims Sr., Gibson plays team pastor Chad Mitchell, and Morshower plays Abilene head coach Steve Warren.
The PG-13 rated film has come a rocky road. Based on the book “Brother’s Keeper” by Al Pickett and the aforementioned Mitchell, an early version of an early version was previewed by moviegoers in Abilene in 2019 and received less enthusiastic responses. Another company acquired the rights at the end of last year.
