PFF’s checklist of prime 20 school soccer coaches accommodates a blatant B1G omission

Essentially, making a list of the best coaches in college football is a guarantee that Ryan Day’s name will come up. In his third season at Ohio State, the Buckeyes under Day only won when they won.
Ohio State has not lost a regular season, won two B1G titles and played in the college football playoffs in a row. But that is apparently not enough for Seth Galina from Pro Football Focus.
Day hasn’t made it to the top 20 college football coaches right now.
That list, released this week, included four B1G trainers in the top 20 – Pat Fitzgerald, Tom Allen, James Franklin, and PJ Fleck. Yes, Day is the most glaring omission, but there are a few other names that could easily have been included.
Kirk Ferentz from Iowa, Jim Harbaugh from Michigan, and Paul Chryst from Wisconsin could all have done it. Instead, none of them were mentioned in the top 20 list. Here are the four trainers of the B1G:
- # 6: Pat Fitzgerald, Northwest
- No. 16: Tom Allen, Indiana
- No. 18: James Franklin, Penn State
- No. 20: PJ Fleck, Minnesota
All four of these names deserve some credit, but there is no doubt that Day deserves to be on the list. Sure, he’s only headed the program for two seasons, but posting a 20-2 record with two B1G titles and college football playoff appearances is a pretty good résumé.
Here is PFF’s complete top 20 list.
