Pitt School Soccer 2021 Preview: Can Kenny Pickett Information Pitt Again To A Bowl?

The 2020 Pittsburgh Panthers football season was emblematic of 2020 as a whole.

A quick 3-0 start for head coach Pat Narduzzi’s group gave way to a four-game losing streak, each including a point loss to NC State and Boston College and a 45-3 loss to Notre Dame. Still, the Panthers managed to shake off the midseason swoon by winning three of their last four to finish the season over .500.

Now that Pitt is getting back into the 2021 season with a super senior quarterback below the middle, the question that begs to be asked is whether Pitt can achieve anything more substantial within the ACC than the temporary high of the annual “super weapon” coming from a top -20 opponent makes a victim.

Season review 2020

  • 6-5, 5-5 ACC, 7th in ACC
  • Pitt had a 4-0 record as an underdog in 2020.

Key player

Quarterback: Kenny Pickett (Senior)

That’s right, Kenny Pickett … still here! Since his true freshman season in 2017, Pickett has started 36 of his 39 games while donning the Pitt-Script jersey, racking 8,552 yards of total offensive throughout his career, and is worth stats from Alex Van Pelt’s program records at QB in one season .

Missing the Miami and Notre Dame games last season, Pickett started nine competitions in 2020 collecting 2,408 yards with a 61 percent completion percentage with 13 touchdowns and nine picks.

Attack (Non-QB): RB Vincent Davis (Junior)

The Panthers launched a bottom 20 attack last season and there is potential for a soaring traffic jam like Davis to increase in 2021. The third-year Fort Lauderdale playmaker blew up for 247 yards on 25 carries and one touchdown in Pitt’s season-ending 34-20 win at Georgia Tech.

Defense: DE Deslin Alexandre (Senior)

Pitts Front Seven was one of the deadliest groups in the country, leading the country last year with a devastation rate of 22.4 percent. That was in large part due to All-Americans Patrick Jones II and Rashad Weaver, who both finished mid-round in the 2021 NFL Draft.

That opens the door for veteran Deslin Alexandre to step in and wreak havoc in an even bigger role. The Panthers will need him to ramp up his production from 2020, where he scored a total of 18 tackles, 6.5 TFLs, three sacks, and a fumble recovery.
