Podcast: Creator Hank Gola talks about his ebook “Metropolis of Champions” in regards to the soccer recreation of the nationwide championship of 1939 1939
On Christmas night 1939, the football team of Garfield High School from New Jersey met Miami High in the Orange Bowl for the “mythical” national championship of high school football. Thanks to a 22-yard field goal from Benny Babula, the Boilermakers of Garfield took the title with a 16-13 win.
This game became an obsession for award-winning soccer writer Hank Gola. The book by the experienced sports journalist City of Champions reveals the long-forgotten game through research in newspaper reports, over 75 personal interviews, letters, oral reports, films, recordings and photos.
Gola talks to Jeff Fisher, co-founder of High School Football America, on the HSFA podcast about his book and his passion for the game of 39 and the town of Garfield itself. Hear below.
