CANTON – The Ohio High School Athletic Association’s crown jewel returns to the birthplace of the NFL.
The OHSAA announced on Wednesday that the Pro Football Hall of Fame will host the State High School Football Championship Games at the recently renovated Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium for the next three years. The deal runs until 2023.
“The OHSAA is excited about this three-year agreement with the Pro Football Hall of Fame as our student athletes, schools and communities experience the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium and all that Canton and the Hall of Fame Village have to offer” said OHSAA executive director Doug Ute.
“We are grateful to the Hall of Fame for their partnership and look forward to working with the Hall all year round.”
The Hall of Fame hosted the State Finals from 2017 to 2019. The 2020 State Championship games were originally intended to be played at the Obetz Fortress in a suburb of Columbus, but have been relocated to Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium due to COVID-19 protocols.
“The Hall of Fame prides itself on treating OHSAA football teams and their fans just as we treat the NFL teams and their fans,” said Steve Strawbridge, chief administrative officer of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “We give you a first class experience while you are here. We guide the teams through the museum and promote the values of the game.
“We look forward to providing the players, coaches, families and fans who visit the games in Canton with an extraordinary experience – the pinnacle of football.”
Earlier this year, the OHSAA announced that the playoffs would be expanded to include the top 16 teams in each of the state’s 28 geographic regions – four for each of the seven registration divisions.
The first two rounds of the playoffs are hosted by the higher seeded teams before the games for the regional semifinals, the regional finals and the state semifinals are moved to neutral locations.
