San Francisco 49ers 2021 Fantasy Soccer Rookie Abstract ⋆ Soccer Absurdity

The 2020 season didn’t go as the San Francisco 49ers hoped it would. It ended up with almost every good player missing out on time at some point. They unsuccessfully defended their NFC championship title and then all hell broke loose. The San Francisco 49ers swapped for the third election in the 2021 NFL Draft. Many charlatans told you that it would definitely be Mac Jones and that Mac Jones was the third best quarterback in that class. Instead, they did a sensible thing and took one of the top three quarterbacks in that draft at Trey Lance. The San Francisco 49ers then added two running backs to their already crowded back room. What can we expect from the three San Francisco 49ers newbies to fantasy football 2021?

TALENT

Large. Strong. Athletic. Can throw the ball over a mountain. Questionable decision-making authority. Can walk a lot. Am I describing Trey Lance or Josh Allen coming out of school? Lance feels very Allenic as all physical features can be seen, but there are many problems between the ear pads. His vision is questionable, he stares at his readings until they open, and he has almost no pocket presence. Lance alternates between YOLO balls and waits for a handwritten letter from his recipient that reads “I’m Open” to reach him before he throws.

Lance would thrive in an aggressive downfield attack with many weapons around him. My immediate thought in this situation was Denver, but I can’t argue with the San Francisco 49ers. His process is a little slow and his ball placement is inconsistent, and he was too ready for the showcase game NDSU played that year, forcing the issue. Still, he has a lot of great features (laser rocket arm, great legs, big body with good pocket presence) and some questionable ones (touch a issue, intermediate and short passing game has lots of irregularly placed balls crushing YAC). Lance has an NFL results range somewhere between Colin Kaepernick and Josh Allen.

2021 OPPORTUNITY

This is where things get a little tough for Trey Lance in the fantasy football leagues of 2021. The 49ers seem darned to keep Jimmy Garoppolo close, though all evidence suggests they’d be better off with his cap room instead. It seems like Kyle Shanahan’s stubbornness will keep Trey Lance on the bench for as long as possible. The 49ers learned two things as of 2020: Jimmy Garoppolo’s health in 2019 was a mirage, and you can’t have Nick Mullens as your only backup or you’re insane.

Do I think Trey Lance will get a chance this season? Absolutely. Do I think Kyle Shanahan will stubbornly stick with Jimmy Garoppolo until he can’t anymore? Absolutely too. Trey Lance is more talented, but Garoppolo is entering his fifth season with the 49ers, so he’s ahead of the game. Pun very intentional because his legs are the problem. Garoppolo can’t keep his lower body healthy, which means Trey Lance will get a crack on the starting grid this season.

2021 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

Trey Lance is the guy you hide in 2QB leagues because if he gets a shot this season he could be a league winner. I like to use the Jalen Hurts series of three top 12 games in its first three starts as a good measure of how rookie quarterbacks running can work for fantasy football. In 1QB leagues, you can ignore it when drafting. But once he gets the call, you’ll likely want to make room for him on your fantasy football lists. Still, you don’t really break the bank for a QB in a one-quarterback league, even one your favorite team pulls in the top three (he says to himself).

Round 3, Pick 88 overall: Trey Sermon, Running Back, State of Ohio (6’0 ”213 pounds)

RB1: Raheem Mostert
RB2: Trey sermon
RB3: Jeff Wilson Jr (from 4-6 months)
RB4: JaMycal Hasty
RB5: Wayne Gallman

TALENT

Trey Sermon is a great example of why having all of the characteristics of a rewind doesn’t necessarily make you a top-notch rewind. He’s quick and powerful, has a good view of the barriers, and takes tacklers head-on (and usually wins). Top line, that’s what you want from a running back. Unfortunately he doesn’t have second gear, his second level vision (and decision making) is… questionable and the defenders drag him down a lot from behind.

Sermon looks fine with the ball in his hands, but it mostly moves in one direction until someone stops it, making it unideal as a head start in the NFL. Plus, Sermon doesn’t actually catch passes (1.1 receptions per game) so he’s really looking at a two-down banger role in the league. Fortunately, the San Francisco 49ers reverse their broad receivers so they don’t need their returning receivers to be broad receivers. “Two downbangers who don’t really catch the ball” essentially describes every back on their roster.

2021 OPPORTUNITY

Who knows, honestly? The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most frustrating teams to predict, and that was before they added three running backs this off-season. Carlos Hyde had only had over 180 touches since Kyle Shanahan became head coach in 2017. In 2019, when the San Francisco 49ers headed to the Super Bowl, three running backs had between 140 and 160 touches. It’s definitely a mess of a situation where no real alpha is rolling back.

Fortunately, the 49ers’ roster construction includes many redundant (but injury-prone) parts. If Raheem Mostert goes down, Trey Sermon could take control of that running back room. Unfortunately, this also puts Jeff Wilson Jr. (when he’s back from injury), JaMycal Hasty, and Wayne Gallman onto the depth map. It will be a situation where the “lead” gets 13 touches back per game and I don’t want to invest heavily in it.

2021 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

I’ll probably stay away from that 49ers backfield if I can help. The story of Kyle Shanahan (five different defenders lead the team to touch in a given game last season) tells me that it will be difficult to find a consistent production. Trey Sermon is worth an addition in the middle rounds in case I’m wrong, but I’ll say Sermon is unlikely to make it into the top 15 per game this year. That doesn’t preclude being a weekly flex game.

Round 6, Selection 194 Overall: Elijah Mitchell, Running Back, Louisiana
Depth diagram:
RB1: Raheem Mostert
RB2: Trey sermon
RB3: Jeff Wilson Jr.
RB4: JaMycal Hasty
RB5: Wayne Gallman
RB6: Elijah Mitchell

TALENT

Elijah Mitchell is great fun to watch, but in a way that feels like it can be carried over to the pros. He’s a strong insider who has a good contact balance and enough jukiness to make everything work. He’s not quite a “cannon” explosive, but he definitely has enough stand up and walk for you to stand up and pay attention. Mitchell is also versatile, splitting wide and catching passes, in addition to being a mid-the-middle banger.

Mitchel has possibly the best hands out of the 49ers’ RB room (without saying much) as he catches the ball and has more than enough body control and hand-eye coordination to pluck flawed throws from the sky despite being under Focus drop-off suffers. His biggest question mark in the NFL is whether he can withstand a full workload since the Ragin ‘Cajuns put him on a committee with Trey Ragas. I like him a lot as a sleeper who runs back later on the third day as he’s a good all-rounder. However, it falls like RG3 so it may not last very long.

2021 OPPORTUNITY

Look at Trey Sermon, and then realize that Elijah Mitchell is even further down the depth map than Sermon. But it’s the San Francisco 49ers, which means Mitchell will likely have three random 17-touch games that total 6 touchdowns and 400 yards.

2021 FANTASY FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

A random 49er comes out of the woodwork to have fantasy football relevance every season. There’s literally no reason why it couldn’t be Elijah Mitchell I guess? Get him in the best ball and ignore him in redraft unless the 49ers back room falls apart completely.
