Texas Excessive College Soccer: Defending 6A Champion Austin Westlake releases the 2021 schedule
With the 2021 high school football season less than 100 days away, schools are starting to publish their timetables. Westlake (Austin, Texas), the defending 6A Division 1 state champion, is the last to do so. After a 14-0 season in which they won their second title in a row, the tension for the chaps is high.
They defeated the two-time reigning 6A D1 national champion North Shore (Houston) in the semifinals with a 24:21 victory. The Clemson-tied quarterback Cade Klubnik scored the game-winning touchdown in fourth place, just under two minutes before the end.
In the following week Westlake defeated Quinn Ewers and Southlake Carroll (Southlake) 52-34 and took the state championship in the largest classification of Texas. That win put the Chaps in 3rd place on the final MaxPreps Top 25 High School Football rankings and the top team from the Lone Star State.
Dodge led Westlake to a 15-1 record in 2019, beating Guyer (Denton) 24-0 in the 6A Division 2 State Championship. The Chaparrals begin the 2021 season with a 24-game winning streak.
This upcoming season will be Dodge’s eighth year as the head coach for the Chaps. He played 88: 11 during his tenure and expects the two-time national champions to be in the top 5 when we publish our MaxPreps Top 25 ranking for the preseason in June 23.
After the two largest Texas classifications (5A, 6A) postponed high school football season last year due to the pandemic, football returned to its normal fall start as most Texas schools prepare for the 2021 season in mid-spring.
Earlier this week, the Chaps announced their schedule for their first game against Temple on August 27th.
The marquee matchups include a showdown on September 3rd with Ollie Gordon and Trinity (Euless), who led 11-2 into the quarterfinals of the 6A Division 1 last season. The following week Westlake takes on Mansfield Summit (Arlington) as the Jaguars contest a 5A Division 1 semi-final.
After a week of goodbye, the Chaps face their first district enemy – Del Valle, who caused a sensation off-season and brought in former IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) Head coach Bobby Acosta. He led the Ascenders to an 8-0 season in his only year at Bradenton and they went from wire to wire as the country’s No. 1 team.
The biggest game is at the end of the regular season against rival Lake Travis (Austin). The two didn’t play last year as the Cavaliers had to cancel their last two regular season games due to a positive coronavirus test in the program. Lake Travis are the last team to beat Westlake when the Hudson Card led the Cavaliers to a 26:25 win on October 11, 2019.
