The anticipation climbs for 100 days earlier than highschool soccer begins in Ohio
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – We are now 100 days to the first Friday of high school football in the state of Ohio. The anticipation increases for the new season.
Here is a list of the most important games (subject to change):
Thursday 19th August
Salem in Crestview
… The Quakers held Crestview (16-12) at the start of 2019. The matchup was the first meeting between the two schools.
Howland at Niles
… At the start of the season, a rivalry game from yesteryear is exactly what the doctor ordered. Last year Howland won a wild one against Niles; Eric Babinchak ran over 400 meters.
Friday 20th August
Mooney at Boardman
… Coach Seth Antram’s debut at Boardman will play against one of the most famous programs in the state (Mooney).
Chaney at Fitch
… This is how the football season should begin for the hawks and the cowboys. For the first time since 2010 they meet at the beginning.
Norwayne at Hubbard
… In 2015, Norwayne paid the Hubbard Eagles a first week visit (22:19 win for Eagles). The Bobcats will return to Trumbull County for the kick-off on August 20th this year.
Canfield in Poland
… This rivalry competition is on the program for the first time since October 26, 2018.
South Range in Springfield
… South Range won the Northeast 8 title while Springfield won the MVAC Scarlet Tier crown. The Raiders (9-1) season ended with a fall on Kirtland (49-35) in Region 17 (D5). Kirtland won the state championship. Springfield (11-1) advanced to the Division 6 State Championship, where they fell 3 points (38-35) to Coldwater.
Bishop Hartley with Ursuline
… The Hawks and Irish both lost in their respective regional championship competitions a year ago. Bishop Hartley was expelled from the Region 11 (D3) championship by eventual state finalist St. Francis DeSales. Ursuline fell in region 13 (D4) to Lake Catholic, who finished as runner-up.
Friday, August 27th
Girard at Liberty
… The Battle of Belmont takes place for the first time since October 26, 2018. Liberty climbed out of an early hole and beat Girard 41-28 in October 2017.
Friday 3rd September
Ursuline at Chardon
… Chardon is the defending champion of Division III after beating St. Francis DeSales in double overtime.
Warren Harding at Hudson
… Last year Harding’s winning streak snapped; eliminated by Hudson (35-6) in the regional semifinals. The raiders are out for revenge.
Valley Christian at McDonald’s
… Coach Andy Hake returns to McDonald, where he played many rivalry games against the Blue Devils as the head coach of the Western Reserve.
Geneva in Springfield
… The tigers will compete against the eagles from Ashtabula County. Last year Geneva (8-2) eliminated Hubbard (22:19) before falling to Chardon – the eventual national champion of Division III.
Garrettsville Garfield at Warren JFK
… JFK rose to the title of national champion against New Bremen a year ago. Garfield was dropped 9-0 from the undefeated by Crestview (23-15) in the regional quarter-finals.
Friday September 10th
Ursuline at Fitch
… Last year that game generated 84 points, with Fitch getting away with a 56-28 win. HIGHLIGHTS: Fitch versus Ursuline
Poland at Hubbard
… Hubbard didn’t have much success against Poland in the last two visits (lost by a combined score of 70-7. However, the Eagles aim to beat the Bulldogs this year.
Western Reserve in Jackson-Milton
… The Jackson-Milton Blue Jays got the best of Reserve last year (46-38). Can you do it again? This time Jackson-Milton takes on the Devils in North Jackson.
Canfield in New Philadelphia
… The Quakers only lost twice two years ago, both on the road (to Canfield, 31-24, and to Chardon, 31-0). The Cardinals will try to bring down New Philadelphia at home in September.
Massillon at Warren Harding
… During Massillon’s run to 10 wins and a trip to the national title game, the Tigers eliminated Harding 24-0 in week three.
Friday 17th September
West Branch in the South Canton
… On October 2nd, West Branch’s offensive exploded by 44 points when the Warriors won 44-14 against runner-up Canton South. The Warriors have won their first championship since 2012.
United in Leetonia
… Last year the bears lost only two games in nine games. One of those losses went to United (41-8). This time, Leetonia will be careful to even out the score.
South Range in Poland
… In the first week of last year on August 28th, South Range recorded the late win against Poland (24-21).
Hubbard at Struthers
… Last year the Eagles held back Struthers and won 7 (14-7). This year, Hubbard joins Struthers.
Friday September 24th
Massillon at Fitch
… The Tigers reached the state championship game in Division II before falling to Hoban 35: 6.
Brookfield in Crestview
… The two schools had to wait until November 6th a year ago to meet. Crestview overthrew the Warriors at Brookfield, 44-12.
Springfield at McDonald’s
… Springfield has surpassed McDonald’s 87-34 in their last two games. The Blue Devils are looking for a surprise at home this time. Springfield takes care of McDonald; Tigers remain undefeated
Chaney with Ursuline
… Last year the two schools met in the first week with Ursuline as the winner (29-6).
Mogadore at Warren JFK
… The Wildcats were knocked out of the playoffs by Springfield 21-0 in the regional semi-finals of Division VI. The Eagles can measure up to one of the state’s true powerhouses.
Western Reserve at McDonald’s
… Coach Jason Lude will try to secure his first win against McDonald. Last year, Reserve fell between 23 and 16 at home on September 25th.
Leetonia in the south
… Leetonia rallies to stun Southern in the defensive battle at the start of last year (14-13). Who will get the best from whom this year?
Friday October 8th
LaBrae in Brookfield
… The Vikings and Warriors faced each other twice last year. In the first session, Brookfield beat LaBrae 35-7. In the rematch in the postseason, however, LaBrae prevailed against the Warriors (55-54) to reach the regional quarter-finals.
Lake view in Poland
… Former Lakeview coach Tom Pavlansky welcomes the Bulldogs to town to take on Poland. Homecoming: Poland will hire football head coach
Friday October 15th
Fitch at Boardman
… The start of last year was a runaway win for Fitch – 33-3. This year the Spartans are trying to turn things around with their rival. Watch: Boardman vs. Austintown Fitch High School Football
Mooney in Steubenville
… Just seeing these two programs on the same line is reminiscent of great games from the past.
Friday October 22nd
Ursuline with Cardinal Mooney
… The Holy War stalled a year ago when Ursuline von Mooney, 28-23, arrived.
Hubbard at South Range
… Since Hubbard joined Northeast 8, he’s had trouble with the South Range. In their two encounters, the Raiders outperformed the Eagles with 80-27 points.
South at United
… Southern gave United their only loss in the EOAC last fall at 34:21. This time the golden eagles bring the Indians in Hanoverton.
Fitch at Warren Harding
… Powell, who had an advantage in the second half, led Harding to another win over Fitch. The Raiders ended Fitch’s undefeated streak (24-10) in the regional quarter-finals of Division II.
Saturday 23rd October
West Branch in Salem
… QB Brock Hillyer may be gone, but the Warriors are returning a lot from last year’s team that beat Salem in the 44-20 season opener. QB Jackson Johnson the Quaker is back to take his team to the top in this rivalry game.
