The SEC Media Days are next week. Marshall County Football Media Day is scheduled for July 29 in Albertville.
Arab (July 28) and Brindlee Mountain (July 30) have photo days scheduled for the last week of this month.
Yes, the football season is just around the corner. Local high school players are already training this month, and Arab – because it skipped spring practice – will start pre-season training on July 26th.
The Knights actually have a home jamboree planned for August 12th with Cullman, a week before they officially open the home season on a Thursday (August 19th) against Albertville.
Brindlee Mountain opens training on Monday 2nd August. The first game will take place on August 20th in Holly Pond.
Brewer, under new coach Matt Plunkett, also had the option to begin training on July 26, but will instead begin on August 2. The Patriots’ photo day is August 7th. They open the season on August 20th, at home against Danville.
Plunkett, officially discontinued on June 10, decided that it was more important to get things right than to hurry up and get players onto the practice field. For starters, he won’t have a full coaching staff until next week.
And, alluding to his predecessor Geoff Walters, who restarted the middle and preschool programs at Brewer, Plunkett initially focuses on these feeder schools.
Three Future Patriot Football Camps are planned for the remainder of this month, including the first on Monday at Eva School. The second is scheduled for Tuesday at Cotaco School and the third for next Thursday at Union Hill School.
The camps are free for all students (ages 5 to 12) enrolled in one of Brewer’s five feeder schools: Eva, Lacey’s Spring, Cotaco, Union Hill, and Sparkman. Campers can visit all three for free.
Hot dogs, drinks and popsicles are provided after each camp.
Campers only need cleats and sporty shorts and t-shirts. Attendees will also attend the Meet the Patriots Night on August 12 (parents will be charged $ 5 at the gate).
Plunkett also canceled a preseason jamboree against Falkville, believing it was more important to familiarize yourself with the players and teach them his system than to dive into game-like action.
“We wanted to get off on the right foot,” he said.
Plunkett has also recruited players – at Brewer. Although Walters left the program mostly in good shape, the roster had shrunk to 26 by the time Plunkett took over. He now has 41 freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors and hopes to start the season with nearly 50 players.
“There are seven or eight more that we are still working on,” he said. “We’re trying to reach 50 by August 2nd.
There are more than 30 players in the middle school program, he added.
Plunkett had to hire five assistant coaches, only two of whom were approved by the board: former DAR assistant Jordan Miller and Chase Martin von Arab. Three more hires are in the pipeline and likely to be approved shortly.
Taking on a 5A soccer program a month before training starts is a big job. But Plunkett said he was the man for the job.
“This is a challenge, but it’s a worthy cause and I love a challenge,” said Plunkett. “There are some fantastic young men (at Brewer and the Feeder schools) and we have access to every athlete.
“Our job is to get them to perform consistently.”
