The place did Athlon Sports activities rank Ohio State in its faculty soccer preview?

Yes, in the time everything is online there are still college football preview magazines popping up on newsstands this time of year. OK, so yeah – you can get digital copies of these, but I happened to pick up some milk and fabric softener the other day and walked through the magazine section. Yes i stopped.

And yes, I picked up Athlon Sports 2021 College Football Preview magazine and bought it to add even more to my ever-soaring grocery bill. But hey, it’s fun to read through, and there’s something about having the magazine on the coffee table for far too long this fall and beyond.

I immediately flipped to the preseason leaderboards to see where Athlon had this year’s version of the Ohio State Football team, and yes, it was right, where every other publication and media company had it, within the top 5.

But what does Athlon say about the Buckeyes in 2021?

What Athlon Says

“Anyone looking for evidence of how close the Buckeyes are to Alabama in the upper echelons of college football might be tempted to watch last year’s national title game, do the math, and find out that they are four touchdowns back . It was that bad at the 52-24 championship beatdown. That result hurt the OSU contingent, but a more appropriate yardstick will come this year when head coach Ryan Day goes through his depth chart of five-star recruits and finds replacements for many of the top players who left Columbus this season. If Day is able to turn one of the nation’s youngest teams into another 12-0 or 11-1 steamroller, then we could see Bama North. “

What we say

Everyone in Miami looks at at least the annual results and draws conclusions about how big the gap is between Alabama and Ohio State. Look, let’s get it out of the way first; Bama were clearly the better team and deserved to win this game. However, OSU missed players due to COVID-19 and injuries, had a shortened preseason and slew of games to improve, and still got as far as it went.

Regardless of what head coach Dabo Swinney takes badly, not being able to play a full schedule, let alone being able to train due to the Big Ten flip-flop and early pulling of the ripcord last year, has been a huge downside. With more game time, more practice, and more player availability, this game is a lot closer.

However, 2021 is a transition year for the state of Ohio. Whoever wins the starting quarterback job will have a variety of weapons available so the offensive will be fine. It’s more about defending, getting the right fillers and glue to fix some of the issues from last season. This team should be a top five ball club, but it will only be a national title contender if the defense comes by.
